  1. RELEASE NOTES FOR SMARTCLIP

  4. This is a utility of the 'one dumb job' variety. It does one job,
  5. and does it fast and with minimal hoorah.
  6.

  8. What does it do?
  9.  
  10. SmartClip a very small app that will do case conversion off of the
  11. clipboard and return the converted text to the clipboard. This gives you
  12. case conversion everywhere you can copy and paste. The conversions are
  13. very smart, using the same logic used by my Torquemada the Inquisitor.
  14. (For example, d伯荒稚苗ヹs are handled correctly (e.g., D＝３鶺ìCﾋLS).)
  15. We don't clobber <Quark XPress tags> or <html> (or anything within angle
  16. brackets). The software is also very careful in the vicinity of '@'
  17. signs, also to preserve Quark XPress tags.

  19. The case conversions are these:
  20.  
  21.     CONVERT TO ALL CAPS
  22.     convert to all lower case
  23.     Convert to sentence caps.
  24.     Convert To Upstyle Caps
  25.     Convert to Downstyle Caps
  26.     Retain as plain text
  27.     WHOA! Change nothing!

  29. The case conversions work as illustrated. Downstyle puts the first
  30. letter of 1-, 2- and 3-letter words in lower case, as is used in some
  31. headline styles. Sentence caps is pretty smart, but software is
  32. necessarily inherently easy to fool, and, in any case, none of the
  33. conversions take account of proper nouns. SmartClip will do 95% of your
  34. work, but there is no substitute of the intervention of an active human
  35. intelligence.

  37. "Retain as plain text" unstyles text copied from applications with their
  38. own internal clipboards. So, for example, you can copy styled text in
  39. Quark XPress or Adobe Illustrator, SmartClip it, then paste it elsewhere
  40. in the same document. When you do this, you will inherit the destination
  41. text region's styling, not the source text's styling (this is easier to
  42. do than to explain!).

  44. Selecting "WHOA! Change nothing!" then hitting "Okay" does the same
  45. thing as hitting "Cancel"--no change of any kind to the clipboard. It's
  46. there for hand-holding purposes, that's all.

  48. Tip: You should put a copy of SmartClip or an alias of it in your Apple
  49. menu for easy access.

  52. Quicker SmartClipping...

  54. Included in the archive is a set of QuickKeys shortcuts called
  55. "SmartClip Universal Shortcuts". These give you instant access to
  56. SmartClip from any application. To use these shortcuts, follow these
  57. steps:

  59. 1. Put a copy of SmartClip or an alias of it in your Apple menu.
  60.  
  61. 2. Import the shortcuts into QuickKeys. Import into the "Universal" set,
  62. because you want case conversion to be available from any application or
  63. from the Finder.

  65. 3. Be sure to have text on the clipboard before you call one of the keys.
  66. Nothing bad will happen if you don't, of course.

  68. These are the Quickeys defined:

  70.     CTRL-SHIFT-C    CONVERT TO ALL CAPS
  71.     CTRL-SHIFT-L    convert to all lower case
  72.     CTRL-SHIFT-S    Convert to sentence caps.
  73.     CTRL-SHIFT-U    Convert To Upstyle Caps
  74.     CTRL-SHIFT-D    Convert to Downstyle Caps
  75.     CTRL-SHIFT-P    Retain as plain text

  77. The keys don't Paste or CMD-V at the end of the sequence, so it's
  78. up to you to do what you want after SmartClip and QuickKeys return
  79. you to your application. And, of course, in most cases you can Undo
  80. even after you Paste if you discover you've made a mistake.

  85. SmartClip is AppleEvent-aware, so you should be able to AppleScript
  86. to it, should you want to. I know nothing about this, so you're on
  87. your own, although the QuickKeys should provide a roadmap of how
  88. to do what you might want to do.
